  • 23% fremantle residents speak a foreign language;
  • Only 9% of citizens walk/cycle to work (out of 32, 600 workers);

VITAL ISSUE: GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR

Increases social problems and reduces community diversity;
Reduced overall well being as peoples skills/capacities are not being utilised in full;

  • Issues of housing diversity and stress;
  • 8.6% Fremantle population in social housing – more than proportion of WA and nation (3.5%)
  • 2.3% increase in unemployment since 2011;
  • Rise in those depending on government support (22%);
  • Only 139 beds available at St Patrick’s support centre;

VITAL ISSUE: HEALTH

Support of positive lifestyle choices combined with availability of health resources leads to community vitality

  • Issue of mental health amongst homeless people:
    • 54% Fremantle’s homeless have combinations of serious health issues (medical, psych, substance);
    • 26% suffer with athsma;
  • Mental health stats:
    • 31% of mental health patients in Fremantle are aged 10-19;
    • the same percentage for ages 20-29;
    • =62% between 10-29 years!
  • 14% residents 65 years + have severe disability;

VITAL ISSUE: LEARNING

  • Fremantle has 3 tertiary, 3 secondary, and 12 primary institutions – (side note: study spaces?);
  • 4 of the primaries have attendance issues with 20% of students;
  • 1 secondary school is below the state average;

Belongingness creates vibrant, healthy communities;
Feelings of belonging lead to healthy rewarding lifes with strong sense of agency;
Question: who is missing out on Freo’s traditional strong sense of community pride?

  • 21.3% citizens volunteered in 2016;
  • 57 charities in Fremantle;
  • Over 21k members of Freo Massive FB page;
  • 5 community gardens;
  • Create youth spaces?
